GENERAL PURPOSE:  Under general supervision, maintains health and welfare of all living specimens located at the San Angelo Nature Center. Performs live animal care for educational purposes of the general public that come into the facility and for private parties booked through the facility.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintains compliance with USDA/APHIS licensing which specifically covers mammals of the Nature Center including bobcats, fox, raccoon, porcupine, jackrabbit, and other small mammals mostly located outdoors. Follows policies and guidelines through Animal Welfare Act (AWA), which regulates the treatment of animals in exhibition and specifications for animal care and coverage. These animals include bobcats, fox, raccoon, porcupine, jackrabbit, and all other small mammals to include venomous and non-venomous animals. Maintains compliance as a sub-permittee through TPW Scientific Research/Educational Display Permit. Performs live animal care and husbandry for animal enclosures, daily maintenance operations on enclosures and exhibits, and plans exhibit design and construction in accordance with all policies and guidelines instructed through USDA/APHIS/AWA/TPW license. Conducts interpreted natural history tours of the Nature Center and Trail systems. Teaches natural history, life sciences, and ecology programs as they pertain to the Nature Center. Assists in program development, set up, tear down, and operation of birthday parties and assist with special events. Supervises volunteers as required, guiding them to ensure compliance of standards. Performs other related duties as required such as reservations and covering front reception area. Hours: 25 variable hours per week, including weekend, evening, and holiday hours.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Strong background in Biology preferred. Required Licenses or Certifications: Must have a valid driver license with a good driving record. Must have dependable transportation occasional use of personal vehicle to drive to off-site Nature Center events. Required Knowledge of: Some native and exotic wildlife preferred. Required Skill in: Communication (written and oral). Being pleasant, helpful, and informative in dealing with the public. Working and caring for living specimens in accordance to licensing requirements. Animals include mammals (large and small), insects, reptiles, and arachnids. Required Abilities in: Working with children of all ages. Speaking to large groups, setting up workshops, and assisting in supervising volunteers. Physical Demands / Work Environment: Must able to conduct nature trail tours of minimum one-mile duration. Must be able to work in all weather conditions. Must be able to lift 30 lbs.
