DUTIES: Under general supervision, performs animal control and law enforcement activities to safeguard citizens from dangerous and nuisance animals. Patrols City to check animal populations for strays, wildlife and animals in traps. Responds to citizen calls for service; captures, contains, and impounds animals at-large, including sick, injured, and vicious animals; relocates wild animals Investigates animal cruelty, blood sport and animal bite reports; assists with the prosecution of offenders. Investigates nuisance and animal cruelty complaints; interviews witnesses. Notifies owners and involved parties of animal violations and corrective actions; write reports and issue citations. Contacts individuals to discuss violations and alternatives for resolving compliance issues. Investigates request of service for dogs running at large, barking, nuisance, and livestock related issues. Seizes animals as allowed by Texas Statutes and City policies; issues citations and warnings as necessary. Provides animal-related information to public; responds to questions regarding animal care and rabies control issues. Assists in operating City animal shelter in accordance with all ordinances and established procedures. Cleans and maintains safe and sanitary conditions in the animal shelter. Transports animals to shelter; picks up and disposes of dead animals. Performs basic animal care including examination, medical care and infection control. Conducts follow-up inspections and verifies compliance. Maintains activity logs and records. Hours:  Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 6:00pm; and on-call nights/weekends (as needed); emergency calls and holidays.

MINIMUM STANDARDS & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: A High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND one year of experience working with animals; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Required knowledge of State laws and statutes, and City ordinances governing the control, protection, licensing, impounding and disposal of animals, including Texas Administrative Code, Title 25, Part 1, Chapter 169. Knowledge of animal capture and restraint techniques and equipment. Symptoms, causes, procedures and reporting requirements for rabies control and other common animal disease. Knowledge of principles of record keeping and records management; local and regional geographical area, road systems, and the locations of landmarks and buildings. Regional animal care resources available to citizenry. Must be skilled in capturing, controlling, containing, and transporting sick, injured, and rabid animals; identifying various types of animals, and recognizing abnormal behavior and symptoms of animal diseases; exercising patience, care and compassion in dealing with animals. Skill in care, maintenance and safe operation of a variety of specialized animal control tools and equipment. Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers and the general public. Operating a personal computer and utilizing a variety of business software. Effective communication, both verbal and written. Work is performed in an office and the City animal shelter; work involves moderate physical demands; must maintain a level of physical fitness to meet Department standards. Must be able to take a pre-exposed rabies vaccination. Must be able to perform strenuous labor for extended periods of time and work in extreme weather. Must pass physicals and be able to lift 63 lbs. on occasion. A valid driver's license with a good driving record is required.
