DUTIES:

Under close supervision, collects water samples and conducts routine chemical and bacteriological tests to monitor the City water systems.  Conducts routine chemical and bacteriological tests on water samples to monitor the City water supply and detect contamination in the water systems; performs laboratory tests according to Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and N.E.L.A.C. standards and procedures.  Conducts physical, chemical and instrumental water quality analytical tests to determine presence of various compositions in water, wastewater and reclaimed water; verifies that City drinking and recreational water supplies meet TCEQ standards.  Keeps records of instrument operation and sampling work performed; enters test results in computer database and logbooks; maintains complete and accurate records for compliance with TCEQ requirements and regulations; notifies supervisor when problems occur which are beyond the skills of the technicians; and tracks the problem until it has been resolved; and maintains inventory of supplies and chemicals.  Hours:  Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm.

MINIMUM STANDARDS & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

High school diploma or GED; AND one year of laboratory experience, or college-level science courses; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Class D Water Operator license from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) is required within six months of hire.  A Class C Water Operator license is required at first license renewal time. Additional technical skills or certifications may be required.  Knowledge of:  Methods and techniques of laboratory analysis of water samples; laboratory analytical instruments and technical equipment; and federal, state and City safety rules and regulations for a laboratory environment.  Skills in:  Data collection and analysis, and mathematical and statistical calculations; following and maintaining safety standards; establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers; and operating a personal computer utilizing specialized scientific applications and business software.  Work is performed in a laboratory environment and full manual dexterity and visual acuity is required for laboratory work.  A valid driver's license with a good driving record is required.
